Clifford’s
sound

Clifford Brown was born in Wilmington, Delaware. By the early 1950s his fluent technique and lyrical sense had made him one of the most admired young trumpeters in jazz.

In 1954 he formed a quintet with drummer Max Roach. The group balanced intricate ensemble writing, blues feeling and wide-open solo space. Brown died in a car crash in 1956, but recordings such as Joy Spring continued to influence later trumpet players.
